Welcome

Malling District U3A was launched in September 2007 and became a fully affiliated U3A in June 2008 by which time it had over 200 members and 20 interest groups operating successfully. Today we have over 400 members and some 60 Study groups catering for the varied interests of our members.

We have a monthly programme of meetings with guest speakers that give talks on a wide range of subjects. Our monthly meetings take place every 4th Tuesday of the month at Ryarsh Village Hall.

We welcome new members and if you are considering joining or require more information, please click on ‘How to Join Mailling U3A’ below.

Further information is also available on this “Malling U3A” leaflet by clicking this link here.

About U3A

U3A stands for University of the Third Age, which is a self help organisation for people no longer in full time employment, providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment. It consists of local U3As all over the UK, which are charities in their own right and are run entirely by member volunteers. Local U3As are learning cooperatives which draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their own members to organise and provide interest groups in accordance with the wishes of the membership. The teachers learn and the learners teach. U3A offers the chance to study a vast range of subjects in such fields as art, languages, music, history, life sciences, philosophy, computing, crafts and photography. A typical U3A has about 250 members but could be as small as 12 or as large as 2000.

About the Third Age Trust

The ‘Main U3A Site’ link at the top of this screen opens the web site of the Third Age Trust, which is the National representative body for U3As in the UK. It is both a limited company and a registered charity. It underpins the work of local U3As by providing educational and administrative support in the development of new U3As. It is managed by a national executive committee, four other officers and thirteen representatives from designated UK areas. The trust is funded mainly by annual subscriptions paid by member U3As on a per capita basis. It has three full time and five part time staff and is located in Bromley Kent.

The several hundred U3A groups in the country are divided into several regions of which ours is the South East Region covering close to 200 U3A groups in about 10 smaller networks. Its web site is here. Within the SE Region, almost all of the U3A Groups in Kent are signed up members of the Kent Network which organises the ways in which local U3As interact, Study Days for members and several other activities. Learn more here. Perusal of these three sites will lead to knowledge of the various meetings, study methods, study days, summer schools etc covering a multitude of subjects which, as a member of Malling District U3A, you will be eligible to attend.
